Hi, I'm Liz McCormick. This is a little about my journey to becoming a qualified Galen Myotherapist.
Please contact me if there is anything else you would like to know.
In 2018 I opened my own dog walking business. Having been disappointed by what I found available for my own dog, I developed a service that was dog centred, ensuring the dogs were mentally stimulated as well as exercised.
Walking dogs gave me a time to work with lots of canine personalities, and also to observe their behaviour.
Coming from a psychology and and social work background, my initial interests were in behaviour and this was the route I had intended to follow. However, in 2020 I attended a talk by Dr. Hannah Capon from Canine Arthritis Management about recognising pain in dogs and I was really intrigued to learn more. I was amazed at the link between pain and behaviour and instantly recognised some issues in my own dogs.
It became apparent to me how often the dogs I was told were difficult or could not behave well also exhibited signs of discomfort and pain, and how often this was overlooked.
I began wondering how I could help dogs and their guardians where pain was an issue. I was drawn to massage as I had seen it have an amazing impact on one of my own dogs.
I learned many lessons from the dogs I walked, but the two which I felt guided me were -
1. The power of giving dogs choice.
2. Dogs are individual and require different approaches to meet their needs.
When researching where I wanted to train in canine massage, I was instantly attracted to Galen Myotherapy. Their Postive PACT ® (Positive Progressive Affective Cycle of Therapy) is all about allowing the dog freedom of movement, giving them the choice to engage in treatment, building trust and overall achieving results which may not otherwise be possible. This also means that the treatment is tailored to what the dog can manage, and the dog is treated in the areas it needs it most.
I was confident that this would allow me to work in a way that I enjoyed and I believe to be ethical, to help both dogs and guardians. Having had the honour of treating dogs in this way I am pleased not only with the physical results, but that the dogs have been left happy, content and relaxed.
